Set by the river Tyne, it was made a royal borough in the twelfth century, and there are delightful aspects of its heritage here today. Living in Haddington

While proud of its past, Haddington in East Lothian (near Edinburgh) has a focus on the here and now. There’s a thriving creative community, with more than 1,000 people a week enjoying classes and workshops at the Bridge Centre and Poldrate Arts and Crafts centre. In addition, the John Gray centre houses the town’s library. It’s a Visit Scotland five-star venue, an interactive heritage hub for all ages. Local shops include a Tesco superstore, a deli, a specialist chocolate shop with award-winning wares, and a bookshop. And once a month the Haddington farmers market attracts visitors from far and wide who love the locally produced specialities.

Sport and leisure

Haddington has its own long-established (1863) 18-hole golf club, and there are many distinguished courses nearby. If walking or cycling is among your pleasures, there’s a range of splendid routes to enjoy along the riverside or even a disused railway line, with views that can’t be seen by car. Look upwards and you might see a buzzard or a lark.

Academic excellence

Schools include: Haddington Infant School (motto: together we can do anything); Kings Meadow Primary School, rated a ’good school with outstanding features’ by Ofsted in 2015; The Compass School, an independent primary school; and Knox Academy secondary school.

Follow the A1 for approximately 12 miles then take the B6471 exit towards Haddington. Take the second exit at the roundabout and follow the B6471.
