Community and local area

Living in Rothbury

Despite all the emblems of its history – nearby remains of camps, cairns and prehistoric stones, hut circles and barrows - Rothbury today is a thriving centre, with independent shops and galleries, cafes, an award-winning butchers, inns, a good library, doctors’ surgery and advanced computer facilities (superfast broadband). You’ll find larger supermarkets at nearby Alnwick and also at Morpeth.

Academic excellence

Educational amenities are excellent. At primary level, Rothbury First School has a fine reputation. Its curriculum extends beyond national levels, with a special focus on personal, social and health education. Bamburgh Castle is less than an hours drive.

For children aged nine to thirteen, Dr Tomlinson Church of England Middle School has received good ratings. At secondary level, the King Edward VI Academy in Morpeth and The Duchess’s Community High School in Alnwick are also well rated.

Sport, music and leisure

Sports include angling on the river Coquet, swimming in the 13.5-metre pool at the Rothbury pool and gym, and getting into the swing of the 18-hole Rothbury golf club.

Special places include nearby Cragside House and Gardens, a National Trust property. Standing on a rocky hillside above a forest garden, it was the first house in the world to be lit using hydroelectric power. The house is surrounded by an enormous rock garden and a huge display of rhododendrons.

The village also has its own annual traditional music festival, established more than 40 years ago. Its unique atmosphere attracts performers from throughout the UK to celebrate a great weekend of Northumbrian musical traditions.

  • They made sure I was happy with everything and didn't make me feel rushed. We looked at a number of properties but the quality of this home was superior.

  • I was really surprised and delighted by the attention to detail! The weight of the doors, height of the skirting boards, floor to ceiling heights, just luxury.
