A village in the city

Westercraigs is like a village in the city: peaceful woodlands and sweeping views, just outside Inverness city centre. With all amenities including a retail park and a major supermarket only five minutes’ drive away, Westercraigs still retains a distinctly rural feel. Excellent schools are nearby, as are sport and leisure facilities, cafés and restaurants, and entertainment hubs like the Eden Court theatre.

Westercraigs sits high up on a South East-facing hill on the outskirts of Inverness, between the River Ness and the Beauly Firth. The development opens out onto panoramic views across the city, the nearby woodlands and the surrounding countryside.

The location of the development has prompted its ‘village in the city’ tag: right at the edge of a major Scottish city, with all amenities including a retail park and a TESCO supermarket only five minutes’ drive away, Westercraigs still retains a distinctly rural feel. Covering 200 acres of land, the development is characterised as much by its forest paths and ponds as by its community of stylish, modern homes.

True to nature

In fact, ecological sensitivity is at the heart of our work in this development. The famous Great Glen Way (the walking route that stretches from coast to coast across the Highlands) runs through the site. Great Glen House (the celebrated HQ of Scottish Natural Heritage, also built by Robertson) is also located here. Beautiful paths meander through the neighbouring Dunain Woods, passing prehistoric stone structures and gravel ridges left by retreating glaciers.

Robertson Homes’ focus has been to retain as much of the existing natural environment as possible, protecting mature trees and woodland, and providing a number of ‘nature buffers’ around the site. Nevertheless, despite its away-from-it-all feel, Westercraigs is highly accessible and well connected, not only to the city of Inverness itself, but also to the wider transport network: it is located a five-minute drive from Kessock Bridge and adjoins the A82.

Contemporary and flexible

Westercraigs’ different house types have innovative layouts that support and reflect modern lifestyles: they offer options of bright garden rooms, gorgeous open-plan kitchen/dining rooms, integral garages, ample storage spaces, and generous rooms-in-the-roof that make perfect spaces for teenage hang-outs or home cinemas.

Linking past and present

The Westercraigs development – with its wide range of house types and costs, and close proximity to good schools, transport links and local amenities – has fast become a bustling, mixed and successful community. However, it has also retained something very important: a sense of the site’s unique Victorian past, as well as the peacefulness and freedom of its natural, rural environment.
